It’s been an amazing past week. We now have 6 swimmers going on to the consolation heat of the State finals on Saturday. The girls 200 Medley Relay and Free Relay advanced as well as Marie Miner in the 200 Free. We will be up in Portland again on Saturday afternoon for one last meet.

The awards dinner/ice cream feed is coming up on Monday, March 2nd. It begins at 5:30 for those that want pizza and will start around 6:30 for those that want to come just for the ice cream part of the evening. I will have a lot more details next week. What I need is some pictures from you. I am in the process of putting together a mini slide show/movie about the season that I will have at the awards night. I have a lot of pictures from the season but I really need some pictures from the end of the season, specifically the varsity district meet and the state meet. If you or any of the swimmers happen to have photos from either meet, could you e-mail them to me? I am also looking to see if anyone got a really good picture of the boys and girls teams on the awards stand after winning the district titles. We are looking for photos to go into the district trophies and would prefer not to have to pay the professional photographer that was there if we don’t have to.

I will e-mail you next week with more detail about the awards night. I would like to have as many people there to celebrate the historic season that we had this year.

Great job by the JV swimmers this past Saturday at Willamette. There were multiple personal bests and they did a great job off of the blocks considering that was the first meet using them for most of the team. I should have the results sent to me soon so I can look at their times in comparison to the other teams to see how

This is it. The season is coming to an end and most of the swimmers have just one week left of practice. This Friday is the varsity district meet down in Corvallis at the Osborn Aquatic Center. The meet competition begins at 3:45 and is scheduled to last until around 7:45. Note that this time is a change from what has been posted. The students will be excused from school at around 12:45 to get down to the pool for warm ups. The swimmers are required to be in school that day until they are excused. If they do not go to school that day, they are not eligible to swim. The swimmers are also required to ride the bus to the meet. If you would like to take your swimmer home on Friday, just give me a note telling me that they are with you. There will be a return bus on Friday and last year, we stopped and ate dinner as a team on the way home. That will be up to the swimmers. If you are interested in timing during the meet, let me know. Timers will be getting into the meet for free. I need three more.

Everyone who is entered will be swimming on Friday. The top 12 times in each event from Friday return to swim on Saturday where the meet is scored. If a swimmer make top 12 or is an alternate, they are required to be at South at 11:30 AM. The meet begins at 2:45 and is scheduled to end at 6:19 PM. As of right now, there will not be a return bus on Saturday. If you are not going to the meet on Saturday and your student needs a ride home from the meet, please let me know.

There will be a spaghetti feed/shaving party this Thursday after practice. The Anderson’s have been gracious enough to open their home to host the party. If there is anyone who would like to help Barbara, please let me know and I will pass things on to her. This party is for all those going to the varsity meet. We will have directions to give to the kids later in the week.

If a swimmer or relay wins their event, makes a qualifying time or is one of the top 18 times in the state, they will qualify for the state swim meet next Thursday and Saturday up at Mt. Hood Community College. I will have an idea of who is going after the meet on Saturday and discuss practice time and transportation to the meet at that point.

I will be collecting money for sweatshirts and sweat pants this week and putting the order in next week. Please get the orders to me at practice or to Donna in the South office if your swimmer is done for the season. They should be ready to pick up at the end of year ice cream feed/awards ceremony.

I’m sure that there will be something else that comes up. Make sure that the swimmers are getting as much rest and fluids as they can.

What an amazing meet last Thursday.  The Saxon girls accomplished the first of their two major goals this season by ended the season undefeated in their dual meets.  The girls won on Thursday by having a more complete team than Sprague.  Sprague won the individual events but our depth kept us in it and eventually pushed us slightly past the Olys by two; 86-84.  Great efforts by all.  Now, on to the second goal of winning the district meet.

The boys team stayed undefeated at home this year with their only loss coming by the hands of Redmond at their pool.  The boys had their strongest season in over five years and are also in the mix for the district title.   All in all, one loss between the two teams makes a successful season.  But it isn’t over yet.

Now we move on to the two big meets of the year.  This Saturday is the JV district meet at Willamette University.  The swimmers need to be at Willamette’s Sparks Center by 12:00 PM for warm ups.  Competition begins at 1:00 PM.  This meet is for all swimmers that did not make the varsity lineup.  I love this meet because it shows a lot of our JV swimmers that they are very competitive with other teams; we just happen to have a larger team than most.  There are no limits to how many swimmers I can have in any event.  So the swimmers will get to swim the events that they want.  After the meet, the swimmers are invited over to my house for pizza.  I will have directions at the meet.

The varsity district meet will be the following weekend, Feb 13th and 14th.  The meet begins at 3:45 PM with warm ups starting at 2:00 PM.  The lineup consists of four swimmers in each individual event and 1 relay from each team.  Each swimmer can swim no more than two individual events and two relays.  My selections are based on times, attendance and seniority.  On Friday, all of the swimmers who are entered into the meet swim with the 12 fastest swimmers in each event moving on to Saturday.  Saturday’s meet is where things are scored.  Warm ups start at 1:15 with the competition beginning at 2:45.  I will have an idea of ending time of the meets after this weekend when the lineups are submitted by the coaches.  There will be a bus to and from the meet on Friday.  The swimmers are required to be on the bus to the meet both days but can ride home with parents afterward as long as I know.  There will be a bus to the meet on Saturday but traditionally there isn’t a return bus because most swimmers decide to go with parents.  Swimmers can also go home with other adults after the meet on Saturday as long as I have a note from both sets of parents. Let me know if this is an issue.  I can add a return bus if needed.

There is a shaving/spaghetti feed the night before the district meet.  The team has one last dinner together and get a mini carbohydrate load before the meet.  Many of the guys shave their heads (Not required) and legs and arms (Recommended).  I will talk to the guys about shaving their arms and legs next week but it has been proven to drop time in high school swimmers by up to 3 seconds for 100.  If the guys chose not to shave their head, they are required to wear a swim cap.  If parent is interested in hosting the spaghetti feed, let me know.  I will provide and pay for any food items.

Pictures are this Wednesday.  I will be sending home picture packets today.  I will also finally have sweatshirt and sweatpants order forms this week so that we can have them back by the ice cream feed.

As always, let me know if there are any questions.

Well, it was a very long day but a very successful trip over the pass the mountains to Redmond on Saturday. The meet was scored two different ways; one was against the whole field which included high schools from not only Redmond but Bend, Hood River, Gresham, Lebanon and Henley and the other way was against just Redmond in a dual meet. The girl’s team won the whole meet finishing 66 points ahead of second place Bend. They also won the dual meet against Redmond, 98-71. The Boy’s team finished second in the whole meet, just 25 points behind Redmond. The dual meet score was Redmond 89, South 81. I was very happy with the times and efforts in the meet. It is a hard meet over there because of the difference between the pools (their pool is 25 meters, ours is 25 yards) and because of the change in altitude. We did extremely well against teams that didn’t lose much practice in December because of school being cancelled.

We have two meets coming up this week. On Thursday, we have our first home meet of the season against McKay. Everyone who is eligible will be swimming in the meet. The meet begins at 2:00 PM. The swimmers will be excused from school at 12:45 and warm ups will start at 1:00. I need 12 timers for the meet. The meet does not go on without timers. For those that have not done it before, it involves pressing a couple of buttons and writing down times. I have Miranda Curliss and Dana Costa signed up for bagels and water is taken care of. There will be about 70 swimmers from South swimming. The Grant Relay meet will be made up on Saturday. The bus will leave South at 10:30 AM and we should return around 6:00 PM. This is a very small meet and a smaller team will be taken to this meet. I will be finding out this week who can and cannot make it to the meet on Saturday and set the lineup from there.

Suits should be in this week (hopefully). I am hoping to have them for the meet.

One other note: There will be practice next Monday on MLK Day but at the holiday practice time of 10:15-12:00. This will be the last practice of the year at that time. We continue to practice during finals as the meets do not stop. I will be finding out if the kids want a bus from South to practice during that week since school ends at 12:00. As a reminder, there is a classroom open to study at in between school and practice on all days but Monday.

I hope to see you on Thursday.

Happy New Year,

I hope that everyone has thawed out somewhat and is ready to start the swim season all over again. There have been multiple developments over the past couple weeks in terms of rescheduling meets and other things.

First, the dual meet against Redmond is scheduled for this Saturday. The bus will be leaving at 6:30 AM from the South parking lot and I will have a more definite return time later in the week but it should be around 8:00 PM. A couple of things have come up that might change this. Weather and road conditions could affect whether we go, as it has the past two seasons. The other issue that has come up in the past two weeks is the actual meet itself. The meet is actually an invitational meet that 6 other teams will be competing at that is hosted by Redmond. When the original schedule came out, the meet against us was scheduled for Thursday the 8th. Redmond’s coach asked if we could be invited to the meet two day later and our scores against each other be pulled out of the results. This was a decision made without me knowing the logistics of the meet. Because it is a meet with 7 teams, we can only submit up to 4 swimmers per individual event and 2 relays per relay events. This would mean that most of the team would not travel to the meet. Because of this reason, I am in the process of trying to get the meet with Redmond rescheduled. I would like to take as many swimmers as I can; the bus seats 55. There are two options of dates that I have the Athletic Directors looking at; this Thursday, the 8th and Thursday, Feb. 5th. The February date is one set aside for makeup meets. As soon as I hear anything, I will let you know. As of right now, we are going on the original date I had, this Saturday.

I will most likely be hearing about other rescheduling issues (like Oregon City and Grant Relay meet) soon and will also keep you up to date on those meets as well.

There is no practice on Thursday as there will be other meets at Olinger that day. Suits are ordered and hopefully will be in soon. I will be sending home order forms for T-shirts, sweatshirts and pants this week. These are optional purchases and I will be taking orders this year so to limit the confusion. I will need money ahead of time on these purchases. I will have all the costs on the order form.

As the swimmers are getting going again, I would like to emphasize the need for fluids and stretching at home. Because of the time off, a lot of the swimmers will be starting over in terms of cardio and muscle strength. These first few days back are going to be hard. It will be much easier on muscle pain if they are fully hydrated and stretching when they have free time at home. They know the exercises they need to do.

Thank you for your understanding and flexibility during this time of getting things organized again. I’ll talk to you soon.

Well, this has been an interesting week to say the least. The Grant meet that was scheduled for tomorrow was officially postponed this morning. With the weather being unpredictable, too many teams were unsure of transportation. They are looking at rescheduling the meet for a Saturday in January. Hopefully that works out.

So what is the plan for the break? We are going forward with practices. As long as Olinger is open, I will have a practice. During the break, things are not determined by the school district. Practices are 10:15-12:00 AM. We will have practice on Monday, Tuesday and Friday the next two weeks. No practice on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Years Eve and New Years Day. I don’t know what the weather will look like because the forecast seems to change by the minute. If things stay the same and you cannot get to practice, I completely understand. If there is any way to get to the pool safely, please make practice a priority. We are going to be almost starting from scratch in terms of building up a physical and cardiovascular core and the more practice that the swimmers can get during the holidays, the better prepared we will be in January. Please let me know if there are any questions.

One other frustration with the schools being closed is that the swim suits are now delayed. Because of the size of the order, I have to submit bids to get a purchase order. Those bids have been in but I’m still waiting for approval to purchase over $3500 of suits. I have been in contact with the suit distributor and things will be processed as soon as I give them a P.O. With the schools being closed, I have no idea when I will hear from them. I won’t deposit the checks until I know for sure that the order is submitted. I just thought that I would keep you updated.

12/15/08

Word just came down that there will be no school for Salem-Keizer tomorrow. This means that there will be no meet or practice tomorrow as well. I don’t know if the meet will be rescheduled because it is a non-league meet but I do know that Matt Crum, the Oregon City coach, really wants to have the meet. He was the head coach at South before me and was looking forward to seeing the seniors that he had as freshmen. We will look into that later. For now, when school starts again, so will practice. I will be finding out about the Grant meet that we have on Saturday later in the week and will keep everyone updated. This is a very small meet in terms of numbers. So until I have more news, stay safe and warm.

12/15/08

As I stated in the last post; because there is no school there is no practice tonight. I haven’t heard yet about the meet tomorrow against Oregon City. It doesn’t look good but I will wait to hear if either we or Oregon City is out of school. Because it is a meet where we need to bus the swimmers, I cannot bring a full team. We have many swimmers that are performing in a concert tomorrow night instead of the meet so that gives us some room to take more swimmers to the meet. If by some chance there is a meet tomorrow, I will have a lineup posted in the office at South for those going to the meet. The meet is at the North Clackamas Aquatic Center, not at the high school itself. The bus will be leaving at 4:15. As soon as I know, I will let you know by e-mail. If the meet is cancelled because Oregon City is out of school but Salem-Keizer is in school, there will be practice at the normal time.

12/14/08

As I watch the snow fall at home while putting together a meet, I thought I would give a quick e-mail about the pending schedule for the week. This week is going to be an odd one in terms of schedule. Right now we have practice Monday, Wednesday and Friday. There is a meet up in Oregon City on Tuesday and there is no scheduled practice on Thursday because of other meets that are going on. There is also a meet on Saturday up in Portland. Just a reminder, if school is cancelled; so is practice and any other competition. If there is a delay, we will still have practice. Right now it looks as if the Portland area is worse off than we are so there is a chance that we might have school on Tuesday but there will not be a meet because the pool won’t be open or Oregon City schools will be closed. The news just reported that there was 4” of snow in Oregon City so things don’t look great. I will keep you updated by e-mail and the school will also know all details.

It was an awesome meet on Thursday. As a coach, It is a fun meet for me because I swam and coached along side West’s coach, Dan. It was a great victory for both teams as the guys had not beat West in over 5 years and the girls showed how deep of a team we are. It was a great meet to build on and the swimmers are looking better with every competition. We need to keep up the intensity and not lose focus as we still have a majority of the season left but we are looking good and I am very pleased with where we are right now.

Be sure to look for updates.

12/10/08

Sorry about the late notice this week. I was waiting on some info about the meet that I didn’t get until yesterday.

First, I would like to comment on the meet last week against North. I was very happy with how we came out in the first meet and performed. It was nice to have a meet where a majority of the kids could get in and get some of the first meet jitters out of the way. Excellent swims by all and I was most pleased that everyone was ready to swim and adapted well to the frustration of the timing system. Things should be better for this week. Thank you for your patience as well. The final scores of the meet were: Saxon girls, 133, North 36 and Saxon boys 137, North 33. There have been some questions in regards to how a meet is scored. The first heat of every event is a scored varsity heat. Relays are scored 8-4-2 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Individual events are scored 6-4-3-2-1 for 1st through 5th. JV heats (heat two and up) are not scored but times are recorded by the coaches. If a time in a JV heat is faster than the varsity heat, it does not count in terms of the scoring of the meet but I count it in terms of lettering points. I hope this explains most of the questions.

The meet tomorrow is against West Salem at Olinger. The meet time has been changed. The meet will now begin at 5:00PM. The coaches decided that we would bump the start time of the later meets to hopefully help the crowding and parking situation in between meets. So for the all 4:30 meets that are scheduled at Olinger the rest of the season, the new start time is 5:00PM. The bus for the swimmers will leave South at 4:15 and they are required to be at the pool at 4:30. There is a meet before us this week so you might have some problems with parking in the lot but the later start time should hopefully help out. I have Karen Clark and Linda Bednarz signed up for bagels and April Rains signed up for water. We will have 65 swimmers. I will supply extra water. Please help me in keeping the kids there for the whole meet. I know there are other things that go on and conflicts arise, but the number of swimmers cheering at the end of the meet last week was down.

Suit orders are coming in and I hope that I will have them all in by the end of the week. I will have an e-mail regarding the Oregon City meet later in the week. The meet against Oregon City is up there on Tuesday and starts at 6:30 PM. If your swimmer is not able to make it to the meet because of the orchestra concert, please let me know. I have already heard from some of you and I will be asking tonight at practice as well.

GO SAXONS!!!!!

I feel as though the season has just started and here comes the first meet on Thursday.  The meet is against North Salem at Olinger at 4:30 PM.  There is not a meet before us so there should be a little more parking than normal.  For those that are new, parking can be very limited at the pool.  I recommend that the swimmers ride the bus to free up some spots.  The bus will pick up the swimmers from South at 3:00 with no return bus.  I have Katy Vigeland signed up for bagels and Kathleen Zaragoza signed up for water.  Since there are a lot of swimmers swimming, if anyone else would like to help out with the snacks I would appreciate it.  We will have about 66 swimmers swimming.  It is North’s home meet so I do not know if they need other timers.

One thing that I overlooked in my scheduling is that there will be NO PRACTICE TOMORROW (Tuesday).  There was a rescheduling of a meet so there will be two meets at Olinger tomorrow effectively kicking us out of the pool (one of the many joys of having just one pool in Salem).  South High will be announcing it at school and I will announce it tonight at practice.  Sorry for the late notice.  I realized it myself this morning.

I will have order forms for the swim suits at practice today or Wednesday.  The suits have been decided on but I’m still researching the best price for both girls and boys.  I will have that on the order form.  The sooner I have the order forms and checks back, the sooner I can place the order.  If there is a financial problem, please let me know.  We will be ordering other things like sweatshirts and pants later and those are optional purchases. The team suit is not.

As always, if there are any questions let me know.
I hope to see you on Thursday.

Sorry this is late but there seems to be some confusion regarding the next two practices...

Tomorrow’s practice (wednesday, the 26th) is at the normal time, 4:30 – 6:15 PM.
Friday’s practice (the 28th) is at the holiday schedule time, 10:15 – 12:00 AM.

The only practices that are at the holiday practice time are the days that Olinger is on a holiday schedule. I’ll have another e-mail next week regarding the North meet on Thursday. Have a great Thanksgiving holiday.

First off, thanks to all of you who were at the parent meeting last night. It really helps minimize the number of questions that are asked throughout the season. If you couldn’t make it, please make sure that you get a policy packet from me at some point.

Second, there are a few things from last night that I need to either correct or better explain. The schedule that was attached to the back of the packet had some dates that were incorrect. The McNary meet is on Thursday, Jan 22 and the Sprague meet is on Thursday, Jan 30. The times are correct though. Sorry about the confusion.

One of the meets that I forgot to mention last night is the Grant Invitational meet which happens on Saturday, Dec. 20. This is an away meet in Portland that I can only take 30 swimmers to. I can’t even take extra swimmers to cheer because of the lack of space. This is obviously not a required meet for all swimmers to attend. I will be talking to swimmers to find out who will be around during the break.

The other thing that I would like to mention is the parent’s role in keeping the swimmers in the best physical condition possible. I’d really appreciate it if, at home, you can emphasize the drinking of water or low sugar sports drinks to keep the kids hydrated and if you could minimize the amount of sugar that they take in. I realize that they are high school students and that sometime that is an uphill battle. I’d also like to mention to you that I like to see the swimmers leaving the pool with more than a towel around them. I mention these things to them but if I have your support as well, there may be a few less colds and sicknesses going around.

Thanks for your support and I am looking forward to a great season.

Hello, this is Ray Hargreaves.

I may not be an assitant coach this year due to my new job in graphic design, but I still wanted to extend a helping hand to Eric and keep this website updated. Nothing's more irritating than an important website that doesn't stay up to date, so I'm dedicated to adding new information and uploading new photos as soon as I receive them.

The Current Schedule link has been updated with current practice times and the year's meet schedule. I've also posted a small handful of photos taken during the changing of the records board.

Here's to the start of a great year for South. Go Saxons!

Enjoy!
